Qatar pays $1m to Gaza healthcare sector

The Qatar Red Crescent announced on Sunday that it is funding a full healthcare programme worth $1m in the Gaza Strip, Felesteen.ps has reported. “The programme is going to be carried out over two years and is aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services,” the organisation explained.

The core of the aid programme is based on promoting the abilities of Palestinian physicians and contracting with highly qualified foreign doctors with specialisms not found in Gaza’s hospitals. It also includes sending Palestinian doctors from Gaza specialising in urinary tract disorders to study in Qatar as part of the Emir’s scholarship scheme.

Doctors who are unable to travel abroad to develop their professional skills or study further will also be funded for training within the besieged territory.

The Qatar Red Crescent has been carrying out programmes in the healthcare sector in Gaza since 2008, on which more than $110 million has been spent.

Healthcare in the Gaza Strip is suffering from an unprecedented crisis as a direct result of the 11-year siege of the territory led by the Israeli occupation authorities and backed by Egypt and the West.
