Amber Rudd resigns as home secretary
Theresa May has accepted the resignation of Amber Rudd as Home Secretary, Downing Street has said.
The minister was under increasing pressure after a new leaked document appeared to contradict her claims she was unaware of deportation targets.
Ms Rudd had boasted in a letter about allocating more resources to immigration enforcement teams with the aim of increasing deportations of illegal immigrations by 10 per cent – a target she said was “ambitious but deliverable”.
The Home Secretary was due to address MPs on Monday and face a barrage of questions about why she claimed to be unaware of any deportation targets.
But on Sunday night she telephoned Theresa May to tell her of the decision to resign amid intensifying opposition demands for her to quit.
